Applied Mathematics
Mrs. Calton A-101 2009-2010
Welcome to the exciting world of math! I hope you are ready for an interesting semester of math applications. We will review and learn math concepts through real world applications, such as probability and its application in games. Guest speakers will explain how math is used in their occupation. This is a semester course, earning ½ credit for passing the semester.
Your grade will be based on a percentage of total earned points per quarter, with the following values for assignments:
Participation 2 points
Class work 5 points
Quizzes 10-20 points
Notebook 20-25 points
Project 100 points
Topic Test 100 points
Bonus x points
(Special assignments, particular scores on OGT, ACT, and SAT tests)
Work from excused absences may be turned in for full credit, allowing a grace period equal to the length of the excused absence. A missed test due to an excused absence may be made up before or after school within a week of the actual test date. For prolonged absences, arrangements for assignments can be coordinated through the guidance office.
Coursework will be posted weekly on the school website, http://www.goshenlocalschools.org. From this site, click on Goshen High School, then staff, Barb Calton and finally the class. Sometimes there is a variance from the web assignments due to unexpected circumstances. Actual assignments are posted in the classroom and displayed through the following week.
Grades will be posted on a regular basis on the web through Progress Book and also in the classroom.
I expect students to:
- abide by school rules
- attend class on time on a regular basis
- come to class with necessary materials: work, paper, pencil, planner …
- show respect for oneself and others
- participate constructively in class
- seek help as problems arise - 2nd is my planning period (A-101)
I am usually available before/after school. My e-mail address is caltonb@goshenlocalschools.org and my school extension is 2011. Project Pass also offers math tutoring and time to complete assignments after school.
Your attendance is important. All absences should be excused.
A tardy to class without a pass merits a 1/2-hour detention. You should be in your seat, ready to work by the time the bell rings.
No food or drink is allowed in the classroom, this includes gum, candy, water, etc.
For this class, you will need:
- 3-ring binder or folder (with prongs & pockets) for Applied Math notes & papers
- notepaper
- pencils for work and a pen for corrections
Possible topics covered in this course are:
Probability and Games
Measurement, Area and Redecorating
Fractions, Measurement and Cooking
Decimals and Pay Checks
Percentages and Earned Interest
Angles and Construction
Basic Operations and Planning a Vacation
Math used in various occupations
Additional topics will be based on students’ interests
This district’s grading scale is: A 90 – 100
B 80 – 89
C 70 – 79
D 60 – 69
F 0 – 59
For quarter and semester grades, I round all decimals up. High school credit is only given for passing the complete semester. Remember, graduation requires 3 math credits but Goshen High School encourages students to take math classes all four years.
