    Mrs. Calton A-101 2009-2010

Welcome to the exciting world of AP Calculus! I hope you are ready for a challenging year of mathematics. We will be using Key Curriculum Press’ textbook, Calculus, Concepts and Applications, along with graphing calculators and manipulatives. This course’s curriculum meets AP Calculus’s AB requirements. You will develop not only significant calculus skills and concepts, but also insights into the process of mathematics and applications of those skills.

This is a 2-semester course, earning 1/2 math credit each semester.

Your grade will be based on a percentage of total earned points per quarter, with the following values for assignments:

    Participation 2 points

    Homework 10 points

    Quick Reviews 10 points

    AP Problem Set 20 points

    Chapter Test 100 points

    Bonus x points

(special assignments, particular scores ACT & SAT tests)

Our district follows the following grading scale: A 90 – 100

    B 80 – 89

    C 70 – 79

    D 60 – 69

    F 0 – 59

For quarter and semester grades, I round all decimals upward.

Work from excused absences may be turned in for credit, allowing a grace period equal to the length of the excused absence. A missed test due to an excused absence may be made up before or after school or during Bonus periods within a week of the actual test date. For prolonged absences, arrangements for assignments may be coordinated through the guidance office.

Homework will be posted weekly on the school website, http://www.goshenlocalschools.org . From this site, click on Goshen High School, then staff, Barb Calton and finally the class. Sometimes there is a variance from the web assignments due to unexpected circumstances. Actual assignments are posted in the classroom and displayed through the following week.

Grades will be posted on a regular basis on the web through Progress Book and also in the classroom.

    I expect students to:

    - abide by school rules

    - attend class on time on a regular basis

    - come to class with necessary materials: text, work, paper, pencil, planner …

    - show respect for oneself and others

    - participate constructively in class

    - seek help as problems arise - 2nd is my planning period (A-101)

I am usually available before/after school. My e-mail address is caltonb@goshenlocalschools.org and my school extension is 2011. Project Pass also offers math tutoring and time to complete assignments after school.

Your attendance is important. All absences should be excused.

A tardy to class without a pass merits a 1/2-hour detention.

No food or drink is allowed in the classroom, this includes water, gum, candy, etc.

For this class, you will need:

~ 3-ring binder or folder (with prongs & pockets) for notes & papers

    ~ notepaper

~ spiral notebook for Calculus homework only

~ pencils for work and a pen for corrections

    ~ graphing calculator (a TI-84+ is recommended)
