    Algebra 2

    Mrs. Calton A-101 2009-2010

Welcome to the exciting world of Algebra 2! I hope you are ready for a challenging year of mathematics. This is a 2-semester course, earning ½ credit each semester. We will be using Glencoe’s Ohio edition of Algebra 2 textbook, along with graphing calculators. The textbook is aligned with Ohio’s 11th grade Math Standards.

Your grade will be based on a percentage of total earned points per quarter, with the following values for assignments:

    Warm up activity 1-4 points

(OGT and standardized test -type questions)

    Participation 2 points

    Homework 5 points

    Quiz 10-20 points

    Notebook 20-25 points

    Project 100 points

    Chapter Test 100 points

    Bonus x points

(Special assignments, particular scores on OGT, ACT, and SAT tests)

Practicing new concepts helps to reinforce your understanding and skills in mathematics. To ensure this practice, homework will normally be assigned daily, except on Fridays. Homework completed a day late will be given half credit. Full credit will be given if you had questions regarding the material, clarified it in class and then completed the assignment by the following day.

Work from excused absences may be turned in for full credit, allowing a grace period equal to the length of the excused absence. A missed test due to an excused absence may be made up before or after school within a week of the actual test date. For prolonged absences, arrangements for assignments may be coordinated through the guidance office. I suggest that you find someone in your class to call in case you forget an assignment or leave your materials in school by mistake.

Homework will be posted weekly on the school website, http://www.goshenlocalschools.org. From this site, click on Goshen High School, then staff, Barb Calton and finally the class. Sometimes there is a variance from the web assignments due to unexpected circumstances. Actual assignments are posted in the classroom and displayed through the following week.

Grades will be posted on a regular basis on the web through Progress Book and also in the classroom.

    I expect students to:

    - abide by school rules

    - attend class on time on a regular basis

    - come to class with necessary materials: text, work, paper, pencil, planner …

    - show respect for oneself and others

    - participate constructively in class

    - seek help as problems arise - 2nd is my planning period (A-101)

I am usually available before/after school. My e-mail address is caltonb@goshenlocalschools.org and my school extension is 2011. Project Pass also offers math tutoring and time to complete assignments after school.

Your attendance is important. All absences should be excused.

A tardy to class without a pass merits a 1/2-hour detention. You should be in your seat, ready to work by the time the bell rings.

No food or drink is allowed in the classroom, this includes gum, candy, water, etc.

For this class, you will need:

    - 3-ring binder or folder (with prongs & pockets) for notes & papers

    - notepaper

    - spiral notebook for Algebra 2 homework only

    - pencils for work and a pen for corrections

Topics covered in this course are:

Chapter 1 Solving equations and inequalities

Chapter 2 Linear relations and functions

Chapter 3 Systems of equations and inequalities

    Chapter 4 Matrices

    Chapter 5 Polynomials

Chapter 6 Quadratic functions and inequalities

    Chapter 7 Polynomial functions

    Chapter 12 Probability and statistics

    Chapter 13 Trigonometry

    Chapter 8 Conic sections

    This district’s grading scale is: A 90 – 100

    B 80 – 89

    C 70 – 79

    D 60 – 69

    F 0 – 59

For quarter and semester grades, I round all decimals up. High school credit is only given for passing a complete semester. Graduation requires 3 math credits, but Goshen High School encourages students to take math classes all four years.
