    Course Goals:
    1. Students will further develop an interest in learning about the various aspects of science.
    2. Students will extend his/her abilities and talents as a science student by participating in many hands-on activities.
    3. Students will be able to give examples of how thinking scientifically is helpful in everyday life.
    4. Students will be able to relate the content they learn in class to real life experiences.
    5. Students will further develop technological skills and use them in the science classroom.

    The 8th grade Science Academic Content Standards call for the following content to be covered during the course of the year:
    1. Earth and Space Sciences (The Universe and Earth Systems)
    2. Life Sciences (Heredity and Evolutionary Theory)
    3. Physical Sciences (Forces and Motion and Nature of Energy)
    4. Science and Technology (Understanding Technology and Technological Design)
    5. Scientific Inquiry
    6. Scientific Ways of Knowing (Nature of Science and Ethical Practices)



    Students will be actively engaged in all of the concepts listed below and perform various activities to aid in their understanding of them:
    1. Earth’s Structure
    2. Galaxies
    3. Life Cycle of a Star
    4. Heredity
    5. Geological Events
    6. Interpreting Data
    7. Newton’s Laws of Motion
    8. Weathering and Erosion
    9. Plate Tectonics

    Grading:
    Students will receive a letter grade (A-F) on his/her report card at the end of each nine weeks. At the end of the year, a cumulative grade will be averaged. Students will be graded on various criteria, including class participation, projects, in-class activities, tests, quizzes, and homework.

    Data Folders:
    Data folders will be kept in the room at all times this year. The purpose of a data folder is to keep track of students’ growth as they progress throughout the year. Data folders will include the 8th grade science pretest, quarterly assessments, common assessments, as well as self-graphed data of the students. Data folders will also include Pro-Ohio test scores (both written and computer-based) and 2pt., 4pt., and multiple-choice OAT formatted questions with student responses. Your OAT Prep Project Checklist should also be contained in this folder.
