Goshen Local Schools has learned that it has maintained its rating of 4.5 out of a possible five stars overall on the Ohio school report cards released Friday, Sept. 13.
Goshen exceeded or significantly exceeded state expectations in all areas of measurement, including graduation rate and achievement. It is important to note that a rating of three stars means a school meets state standards.
Superintendent Brian Bailey said that while the report card is just one measure the district uses to monitor progress, the high rating is a credit to the hard work of both students and staff.
“We have incredible teachers and our support staff is second to none, our students work hard to bring their best to us every day, and our staff digs deep into assessment data to make adjustments if a student is excelling or lagging,” Bailey said. “We continue to innovate and find new ways to make sure we are supporting students however we can.”
In addition to the overall rating, the report card measures five components: Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation, and Early Literacy. Goshen earned:
5 stars in graduation rate
4 stars in gap closing
4 stars in achievement
4 stars in early literacy
3 stars in progress
Another area on the report card where Goshen made big strides is the Chronic Absenteeism indicator. Goshen "met" this indicator because the district decreased its chronic absenteeism rate by almost three percent. The district continues to remind parents and students that showing up every day is an important life skill, but it also has a direct impact on academic success.
By building, the overall ratings were:
Goshen High School - 4.5 stars
Goshen Middle School - 4 stars
Spaulding Elementary - 3.5 stars
Marr/Cook Elementary - 4 stars
To calculate these components, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce uses test results from standardized tests in grades 3 through 12 take each spring. Bailey said that this is just a one-day snapshot for students, but the results look good.
“We believe that there is more to a Goshen education than just one day’s worth of tests,” he said. “But our scores and rankings within the county and Tri-State area are impressive and should be celebrated.”
