The Goshen News Network, a student-run news organization in Goshen High School, recently received $10,000 in financial support after winning a community grant.
With help from the Goshen Education Foundation, GNN won the grant from Connect Clermont to grow their school journalism program. Connect Clermont is a community services organization that connects resources to Clermont County citizens. The Goshen Education Foundation applied for the grant on behalf of GNN, and presented students with their check this week.
In the grant application, GEF explained that GNN is more than a class at school; it is serving to fill a "news desert" in the Goshen community.
"By producing multiple segments that highlight local businesses such as HealthSource of Ohio, Weiss Baking, and Goshen Grind, we promote the district and build strong partnerships with community leaders." This "allow[s] students to gain valuable public speaking, technology, journalism, and production skills that better prepare them for college and a career. "
Among other things, GNN plans to use the funding to complete their studio setup with a teleprompter, more green screens, lavalier microphones, cameras, and SD cards. GNN is also setting up a permanent streaming center with a ring light, computer, and a cart for mobility.
GNN adviser Emily Slagle and members of the Goshen Education Foundation attended the Good Deeds Clermont Celebration on Nov. 7 at Grant Career Center to accept the grant.
